Allocation of Reactive Power Compensation Devices within the Electricity Network

The definition of a mathematical basis and the development of an associated software package for the most favourable allocation of a reactive power compensation device in the electricity network are the most important objectives of this project.

By applying modified dynamic programming methods, it is necessary to determine the most favourable location and size for a compensation device from three independent standpoints: fulfilment of voltage condition criteria; minimisation of active power loss and avoidance of voltage collapse. With the transition to an electricity market, rules for the regulation of reactive power in electric power system become, partly, influenced by the conditions on the market itself. At the same time, power system planning methodology continues to include solutions for the problem of reactive power compensation. A software package - OPTLOK, which automates the entire procedure, is being developed in-house under the framework of this project.
