The objective of this project is to develop a Croatian national system for lightning
detection and incorporate it into the European Cooperation for Lightning Detection
(EUCLID) system. In addition, the project aims to establish international cooperation
with neighbouring countries in the exchange and interpretation of data.
International experience shows that the utilisation of lightning detection data and
the provision of information on thunderstorms in due time can result in significant
savings in infrastructure planning, protection and maintenance. This is primarily
the case with electric power systems; aviation; nautical safety and tourism; the
protection of telecommunications and computer systems; insurance companies;
and, increasingly, early detection of forest fires which are, in part, caused by lightning.
A network of sensors for lightning detection will be placed throughout Croatia.
The data that is thus obtained shall be shown in expanded real time on Internet
applications in Geographical Information Systems format.
