Concept and Preliminary Project of an Energy
Independent Ecological House
The project involves the development of a concept for an energy independent ecological
house as an element of an autonomous solar village for rural tourism on
Croatian islands.
Energy and environmentally conscious building construction aims to: reduce heat
losses from a building by improving the insulation of its outer elements, and by providing
an adequate relation between the surface area and the building’s volume; increase
heat gains within a building through adequate orientation and the use of solar energy;
utilise renewable energy sources; and increase the efficiency of the heating system.
The analysis shows that passive house standards provide economically feasible
ways to reduce energy demand within new buildings in conformity with the principle
of sustainable development. The concept of an energy independent house
for rural tourism on islands represents a model for designing houses in rural areas
with limited infrastructure. Heat and fresh air dissipation were reduced to a minimum
the external envelope and a favourable relation between the surface area and the
building’s volume. The principal goals of the study are to reduce energy demand,
utilise renewable energy sources, protect the environment and develop tourism
in isolated rural areas on Croatian islands.
