The Department specialises in energy system operation and development, analyses
in the field of energy generation and transformation, and business strategy and decision making analyses.

The Department traditionally manages energy system development planning projects, i.e. Master Plans. In the process of long-term planning, internationally renowned models such as WASP, LOGOS and ENPEP are utilised alongside program packages developed in-house such as SIPRA and GEB. For mid- and shortterm planning and optimisation, GTMax and SDDP models are utilised. Not only have individual employees been trained abroad in the use of the above mentioned software models, but they are also (in regard to the gained level of knowledge and experience in the application of the models) invited lecturers on expert courses.

The Department’s employees participate in the processes of energy sector liberalisation and deregulation. In addition, they participate in the development of draft legislation related to the Law on Electricity Market. They also perform analyses and make recommendations in regard to various functional models related to the electricity market.

Other projects managed by the Department include the optimisation of hydroelectric and thermal power plants, calculation of power generation costs, market (i.e. market environment) analysis, and analyses of business performance indicators.

Numerous activities regarding the efficiency of energy generation and consumption are also organised. In addition, trends set by developed countries are followed and concepts and implementation models for energy efficiency (ESCO model) which have favourable effects on energy systems by promoting publicprivate partnerships are also developed.

The Department’s employees manage four National Energy Programmes which are related to the efficiency of energy generation (KOGEN), energy consumption (MIEE and KUENcts), and the creation of preconditions for the development of small hydroelectric plants (MAHE).
