The Department was founded in order to satisfy growing requirements for a
technologically advanced level of utilisation of information, computing and communications
resources. The goal was to increase the operating efficiency of the
Institute’s employees in performing numerous tasks. The educational background
and the age of the Department’s employees vary, which enables the completion
of different tasks within a successful team.
The main tasks of the Department are: planning, development, implementation
and maintenance of the Institute’s IT and communications systems; development,
programming and maintenance of computer applications for end users; administration
of operating systems, computer networks and user applications; hardware
maintenance and software support.
The Department actively plans, develops, builds and maintains voice, video and
data transfer communications systems; realises video conferences via ISDN or
Internet from the Institute’s premises; broadcasts audio-video program via the
World Wide Web when supporting conferences taking place at the Institute. In
addition, some of the Department’s main activities include management and
cooperation in executing development projects related to complex information
systems, databases, web applications and document management systems.
Particular attention is given to programming, designing and maintaining web pages,
and developing, designing, programming and maintaining databases.
The work performed by the Institute’s library with its collection of information and
documentation is also highly significant. In addition to classical means of cataloguing
publications, the library also digitalises the Institute’s publications so that
they can be presented on the Internet. Another significant aspect of the Department’s
work includes editing, designing and managing the Institute’s publishing
activities. In its work, the Department closely cooperates with the Croatian
Academic and Research Network (CARNet), the University Computing Centre
(SRCE) located in Zagreb, the Croatian Electric Utility Company (HEP), the University
of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), the Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency (CERA) and many other institutions and companies.
